A New Private Couples Retreat Launches in the Garden Route

WILDERNESS, SOUTH AFRICA, A new private couples retreat has launched in the Garden Route, combining an adults-only cabin stay with a curated programme of local experiences, private dining and deliberately unstructured time for two.

Wilderness, Together is a five-night, six-day retreat based at Mandalay Farm in Hoekwil, near Wilderness. Unlike a conventional resort stay or group wellness retreat, the experience is reserved for one couple at a time, with no shared accommodation or scheduled group activities.
The retreat is designed for couples who want to step away from everyday routines without entering a facilitated therapy or coaching programme. There are no group sessions or relationship workshops. Instead, the itinerary combines shared experiences with private time at the cabin.

The five-night retreat includes private accommodation, all meals prepared by a private chef and a programme of curated Garden Route experiences. Included in the stay are a private game drive on a working buffalo farm near George, two simultaneous microlight flights along the coastline, a sunset cruise on Knysna Lagoon, a gourmet beach picnic, an in-cabin couples massage and a self-led cacao ritual. The itinerary has intentionally been kept light. Most days contain one main experience, leaving the rest of the day open rather than filling the stay with back-to-back activities.

The cabin itself forms an important part of the retreat. Couples have private use of a wood-fired outdoor hot tub, spa bath, mirrored four-poster bed and adults-only playroom. Self-guided activities including conversation cards, a private workbook, love-letter prompts, body painting, role-play prompts and an erotic treasure hunt are also available for couples to use at their own pace. Paddleboards and kayaks are available for time on the lagoon.

The retreat can be extended from five to seven nights, while optional additions include a private photography session with a keepsake coffee-table book and the option to combine the Garden Route stay with time in the Cape Winelands.

From a tourism perspective, the retreat brings several Garden Route experiences into one hosted itinerary while keeping accommodation and most of the couple’s downtime based in Wilderness. Activities extend across the wider region, including George and Knysna, creating a stay that combines accommodation, food, adventure and local tourism experiences.

The one-couple-at-a-time format also distinguishes the retreat from more traditional romantic hotel packages. Privacy is built into the operating model rather than offered as an upgrade, while the deliberately limited occupancy allows the stay to remain centred around the individual couple. The experience is aimed at couples looking for a private Garden Route escape that balances shared activities with enough unscheduled time to reconnect away from work, household routines and everyday distractions.

Guests can enquire about preferred travel months and choose between a five-night or seven-night stay. No payment is taken during the initial enquiry. Available dates and itinerary details are confirmed first, after which a deposit can be used to reserve the stay.
Weather-dependent activities, including the microlight flight and sunset cruise, are scheduled with flexibility where necessary.
