Stones Safaris has introduced a guided non-Big-5 bush walk near Hoedspruit, designed for families and travellers who want to enjoy the Lowveld on foot without the intensity of walking in a Big-5 area.
The guided walk takes place in a local non-Big-5 nature reserve and runs for approximately 2.5 to three hours in the morning, from 07:00 until around 09:30 or 10:00. Instead of placing the emphasis on potentially intense encounters with the Big 5, the experience allows guests to slow down and focus on the surrounding bush, including tracks, plants, birds, insects and the smaller signs of wildlife that are often missed from a vehicle.
That distinction is central to the new experience. While Big-5 bush walks can appeal to travellers looking for a more demanding and high-adrenaline safari activity, this walk is designed for people who want to be outside, learn about the bush and enjoy being on foot in a setting that feels more accessible.
For families visiting Hoedspruit, Kruger National Park or the wider Greater Kruger region, the walk adds an alternative to the standard safari schedule. Children, parents and grandparents can take part together, making it suitable for groups that may not all want the physical or emotional intensity associated with walking in a Big-5 reserve.
The experience does not require previous walking safari experience or specialist equipment. The focus is less on distance and more on observation, with the guide helping guests interpret what they see around them and understand how the different parts of the Lowveld ecosystem connect.
Optional language support is also available in Zulu, French and Spanish, adding flexibility for international families and travel partners arranging activities for multilingual guests.
For travel agents and tourism professionals, the walk offers a practical activity for family itineraries in the Greater Kruger region. Its shorter morning format means it can be combined with other Hoedspruit experiences, while its non-Big-5 setting makes it relevant to travellers who want to experience the bush on foot but may not be comfortable with a more intensive walking safari.
The new bush walk broadens the way visitors can experience the Hoedspruit area. Rather than competing with traditional game drives or Big-5 safari activities, it provides a different type of encounter with the landscape: slower, more observational and easier for a wider range of travellers to enjoy together.
