Tourism Month will put domestic travel, digital innovation and Limpopo in focus this September, with Sho’t Left offers and World Tourism Day planned at Mapungubwe.

South Africa has officially launched Tourism Month 2026, placing domestic travel, digital technology and greater visibility for tourism businesses at the centre of the national September campaign.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille launched the programme in Durban on 13 August under the theme “Growing South Africa’s Tourism Sector in the Digital Era”, with South Africans being encouraged to travel within the country while the tourism sector looks more closely at how artificial intelligence, digital platforms and online discovery are changing the way people plan and book travel.

The domestic tourism drive comes as local holiday travel shows significant growth. According to figures presented by the Minister, South Africans took 21.2 million overnight trips during the first six months of 2026, up 4% from 20.4 million during the same period last year. Holiday trips increased by 36% to 5.2 million, although overall domestic tourism spend remained lower than the comparable 2025 period.

“Tourism begins at home,” De Lille said, positioning domestic travellers as an important part of building a more resilient tourism economy.

Affordability will form part of the September programme, with South Africans again being encouraged to take a Sho’t Left. The Department says Sho’t Left Travel Week will provide access to discounted travel offers and packages aimed at making domestic trips more accessible, from day outings and weekend breaks to longer journeys.

The Minister also confirmed that South African National Parks Week and provincial Mahala Weeks will complement the campaign with additional opportunities for affordable local exploration. Travellers should, however, check the relevant park or provincial tourism authority for confirmed 2026 dates, participating attractions and access conditions before making plans.

Technology is another major focus of this year’s campaign. The Department says digital platforms are increasingly influencing how travellers discover destinations, while artificial intelligence is already being used to search for places to visit, develop itineraries, compare experiences, translate information and support travel decisions.

For tourism businesses, the message extends beyond how travellers use technology. De Lille highlighted the opportunity for smaller tourism operators to become more visible beyond their immediate locations through digital platforms, while stressing that technology should make participation in tourism easier rather than creating another barrier for smaller businesses.

“Technology should lower barriers to participation and not create new ones,” she said.

The digital focus will continue through to World Tourism Day on 27 September, which will be marked internationally under the 2026 theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.” South Africa’s official World Tourism Day celebration will take place at Mapungubwe National Park in Limpopo, in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, South African Tourism, the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism and Limpopo Tourism Agency.

Limpopo has also been selected as South Africa’s province of focus for Tourism Month 2026, giving the destination a national platform during September. The campaign is expected to encourage travellers to explore beyond established tourism routes and consider smaller towns, rural areas, cultural attractions, nature experiences and locally operated tourism businesses.

The domestic campaign takes place against a backdrop of growing international arrivals. The Minister reported that South Africa welcomed close to 5.6 million international tourists between January and June 2026, representing a 12% increase compared with the same period last year.

For the tourism and hospitality trade, Tourism Month therefore carries two parallel messages: South Africans are being encouraged to spend more of their tourism rand at home, while businesses are being challenged to improve how their products are discovered and presented in an increasingly digital travel market.

September will culminate in World Tourism Day at Mapungubwe, bringing the domestic travel, Limpopo and digital tourism themes together as South Africa considers how technology can support tourism growth without losing the people and communities at the centre of the visitor experience.
